Dr Mbendera is an Educationist by training having obtained a B Ed majoring in History at the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College in 1982. She subsequently obtained a post graduate Diploma in Professional Studies in Education (DIPSE) at Huddersfield University (formerly Polytechnic) and an M Ed. in Training and Development at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. She obtained her PhD in Leadership and Administration of Higher education at the University of Alberta, Canada in 2004.
Dr Mbendera has worked in education throughout her entire career having taught at secondary school, post-secondary and university levels. She has supervised student research at doctoral and masters levels at Malawi Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing and Malawi Institute of Management. She also worked as an educational manager through positions of head of department, Dean and Academic Centre manager. She has contributed to book chapters on higher and tertiary education and journal papers on nursing management.
Dr Mbendera is interested in higher education policy and management including equitable access, sustainable and quality higher education and innovative, educational and general leadership, curriculum development and delivery. To this end, Dr Ida Mbendera and her late husband, Justice Maxon R Mbendera SC, co-founded Jubilee University to put into practice their combined knowledge and experience.
She is one of the contributors to the development of the NCHE’s original institutional framework.
